LDFW Lifting Long-standing Oyster Lease Moratorium
On Wednesday the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) announced that they would be lifting the long-standing oyster lease moratorium.
The moratorium has been in effect since 2002 and prevented LDFW from leasing state-owned water bottoms to private entities for oyster cultivation. It was originally established because of user conflicts within the coastal zone. Lawsuits were filed by oyster industry members in response to coastal restoration activities being performed by the state.
