Gray Whales Along West Coast Decline; Drop Doesn't Imperil Population
Gray whales are a familiar sight along the West Coast, but an unusual mortality even seems responsible for a recent decline in the population.
A new population assessment shows a 24 percent drop since 2016, to an estimated 20,580 whales.
"That is similar to previous fluctuations in the Eastern North Pacific population that has long since recovered from the days of whaling," NMFS said in a a press release.
