Senate Passes Bill Aimed at Protecting Whales, Marine Life from Drift Gillnets
The Driftnet Modernization and Bycatch Reduction Act, a bill focused on phasing out large-mesh drift gillnets passed unanimously through the Senate on Friday, the bill will now head to the House of Representatives.
The bill was introduced by Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) to eliminate the use of these nets which are used off the California coast.
The state of California took similar action in 2018 to phase out the nets in state waters but this act would extend protections in federal waters within five years...
