Today's Top Story: Bristol Bay Sockeye Returns to Date Compare Poorly with 5-Year Average
Last week was Statistical Week 26, which has traditionally been a week or two before the peak of fishing in the Bay. By now, an average cumulative catch from all areas would be close to 4 million fish. As of June 27, harvest has been 1.16 million sockeye. Total escapement across all five districts is currently at 790,000 sockeye. Last year’s escapement at this time was 1.26 million sockeye. The current catch and escapement numbers are expected to increase steeply in the next two weeks. Across several decades of data collection, the historical peak of Bristol Bay has been close to the 4th of July, but in recent years, the peak has edged forward in time, reaching July 10-11...
