Georgia Oyster Harvesting Season Closing June 1
Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources announced that the state’s territorial waters will be closed to commercial and recreational oyster harvesting beginning June 1. According to the government agency, the closure is routine and part of the requirement for Georgia’s Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Vp) control plan.
Vp is a naturally occurring bacteria and can be found in filter-feeding shellfish. Vp occurs in higher concentrations during the summer months, so to protect public health the DNR routinely closes territorial waters to harvesting.
