Scottish Sea Farms’ new hatchery sent its first smolts to sea pens, a critical milestone of the company’s £55m Barcaldine hatchery.
The smolts arrived as eggs at Barcaldine in January 2019. They were hatched and reared using a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). The smolts had an average weight of 160 grams, which marked a significant increase compared to smolts grown by Scottish Sea Farms using traditional hatchery methods
