Ecuador Promises Enforcement Improvements in Response to EU Yellow Card on Tuna
Ecuador is the largest tuna producer in Latin America, harvesting over 300,000 tons in 2017. In 2016 a group of major Ecuadorian producers formed Tunacons, a tuna conservation organization, to undertake a fishery improvement project and bring most of the Ecuadorian tuna fishery under the MSC.
As a result, the producers have responded to the European Commission’s issuance of a yellow card for Ecuador tuna exports. The yellow card is a notification from the European authorities that without changes or improvements in a fishery management policy, exports from the country may be prohibited.
