Today's Main Story: Opinion: Math Just Doesn’t Add Up in Gulf of Alaska Trawl Fisheries
An opinion piece from Jon Warrenchuk, a long-time fisheries scientist who serves as Oceana’s Senior Scientist and Campaign Manager in their Juneau office. Jon writes: “The North Pacific Fishery Management Council just voted to advise the Fisheries Service to increase the observer fee, a fee collected from groundfish vessels and processors that pays for monitoring the fisheries. Oceana supported the fee increase. The existing fee wasn’t generating enough money for the program to adequately sample the catch and bycatch of the fisheries. With the fee increase, the Observer Program will gain over $1 million in new revenue. Now we need the money to be spent wisely...”
