Irish Scientists Develop World's First Shellfish Traceability Tool
An Irish-led team of scientists developed the first scientific-based shellfish traceability tool in the world. The research team was led by Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT), alongside NUI Galway.
The tool used trace elemental fingerprinting of the soft tissues and shells of shellfish to determine the harvest location of blue mussels and scallops with 100 percent success. The tool was able to successfully locate mussels reared at two sites, located just six kilometers apart, in one bay.
