The Winding Glass: Is Thailand Coming Back as Global Shrimp Supplier
In 2010 Thailand was the largest shrimp exporter in the world. But over the next few years, a series of disease outbreaks and natural disasters including flooding decimated the Thai industry, caused production to fall more than 50%.
Although EMS was a worldwide problem in the years 2012-2014, Thailand, along with Malaysia and China, were among the countries hardest hit.
Major shrimp producers who largely escaped the consequences of EMS included India, Indonesia, and Ecuador.
The result is that although Thailand’s shrimp production is now improving, it is facing a totally different global market than it was before the crisis.
Trade patterns for Thailand have changed dramatically over the past decade.
