As Coast Guard Celebrates 229 Years of Service, Attention Shifts to Alaska and the Arctic
Last Sunday the U.S. Coast Guard celebrated 229 years of service. The only branch of the military that is not part of the Department of Defense, the USCG was founded on August 4, 1790, after Congress commissioned the construction of ten ships to help enforce federal tariffs and prevent smuggling.
