Alarmingly High Bottlenose Dolphin Deaths in Gulf of Mexico Trigger Another UME Declaration
Nearly 300 bottlenose dolphin deaths have been reported across the northern Gulf of Mexico beaches from the Florida panhandle to Louisiana, triggering another Unusual Mortality Event, or UME from NOAA Fisheries.
“Today we are declaring an Unusual Mortality Event for common bottlenose dolphins from Franklin County in Florida to the state of Louisiana,” said Allison Garrett, Public Affairs for NOAA Fisheries Southeast Region.
“As of June 12, there have been 279 strandings, three times the historical average in the Gulf.”
