NOAA Lists Newly Discovered Gulf of Mexico Bryde’s Whales as Endangered
Add to the list of endangered whales the Gulf of Mexico Bryde’s Whale, far less abundant than Atlantic or Pacific Right Whales and faring only slightly better than the Gulf of California’s beleaguered vaquita porpoise.
The most recent estimate is there are fewer than 100 individuals, with fewer than 50 being mature. Pronounced “Broo-dus,” Gulf of Mexico Bryde’s whales are the only known resident baleen whales in the Gulf of Mexico, and found only last month as a distinct subspecies of the Bryde’s whales found globally...
