US Appeals Court upholds ban on Mexican Seafood Imports from Upper Gulf of California for 3rd time
A US court of appeals in Washington DC has upheld a ban on Mexican seafood imports from the upper Gulf of California as a legitimate measure to protect the Vaquita porpoise under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
This is the third time a court has upheld the ban. Conservation groups initially filed suit in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York City in March and secured a preliminary ban on imports in July.
The ban applied to all seafood from the area where Vaquita’s are known to exist, based on the failure of the Mexican government to enforce a ban on gillnets.
