Today's Main Story: Alaska Snow Crab Survey Finds 60% Jump in Legal Male Crab; King Crab Numbers Will be Down
Today's lead story reports that big drops for Bering Sea red king crab but a big bounce for snow crab. Declines in Bering Sea king crab and Tanner crab stocks are being described as “substantial,” while snow crab appears to be on a big rebound. That’s according to the results of this year’s annual survey which were presented to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council’s crab plan team last week. Read more here.
In other news, the United States' trade war with China is leading to fears that Canada will be used as a "gray market" conduit to the Chinese market for lobsters from Maine. Geoff Irvine of the Lobster Council of Canada says there have been indications since then that Maine lobster is coming into Canada and then being sent onwards to China, and Seafood News' Editor John Sackton says he is still waiting to see how Chinese border and customs agencies would handle Maine lobster shipped as Canadian.
