Today's lead item reports on this year’s NOAA’s trawl survey findings. There was a big surprise in the annual NOAA trawl survey for the southern Bering Sea this year: no cold water, and few pollock in the southern Bering Sea. Recently scientists involved in the survey gave public talks in Nome, in a meeting at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Northwest Campus. They said they found things never seen in the 34 year history of the survey. In the past, the survey has always found a ‘cold pool’ within the Bering Sea south of St. Lawrence Island. This year, no 'cold pool' was found, meaning no barrier to keep pollock from migrating northward ...
