China’s Tier 3 Ranking a Reminder of Trade Risks Facing Seafood Industry [Editorial]

China has been downgraded to Tier 3 in the US annual trafficking in persons report. The reason given was that China had not responded to US inquiries about what progress it was making in this area, after being listed as Tier 2 for several years.
Most in the seafood industry are quite familiar with the Trafficking in Persons report, because it has been an important factor in seafood trade relationships with Thailand, (which was downgraded, and then upgraded), and because labor abuse issues, especially on vessels, are getting a lot of attention.
The Tier 3 designation prompted an angry response from China, which said the US had no business commenting on internal Chinese government legislation.
