EU Urges More Action on Fisheries Subsidies as Chinese Compete with Spanish Fleet

The European Union has called to ban harmful fisheries subsidies that contribute to unsustainable fishing, in order to meet the United Nations' goal to conserve the oceans.
The two most damaging types of subsidies are those that increase the fish-catching capacity of fleets, which leads to overfishing, and those for illegal fishing activities, EU commissioner for the environment, maritime affairs and fisheries, Karmenu Vella, and EU commissioner for trade, Cecilia Malmstrom, said.
The call comes after a new study revealed that Chinese subsidies to fish catches have were estimated at €17bn in 2011-2013, averaging €5.56bn per year in the period.
