PEI Lobster Advisory Committees to Weigh Request to Lengthen Season
Officials representing Prince Edward Island's (PEI) lobster fishery will decide by the end of today if they will apply for an extension to the season scheduled to close on June 30. Calls to extend fishing in Lobster Fishing Areas 24 and 26A are based on preliminary estimates that PEI's spring season catch is down 10 percent from last year. The feeling is landings are lagging because of poor weather and cooler waters since the season opened. “It’s a different kind of year,” said Dennis King, executive director of the PEI Seafood Processors Association. “Product’s harder to get this year, obviously. The big difference … is we haven’t seen that big glut of lobsters land in any given week that would cause processors to work tremendously extra hours.”
