NMFS Closes Swordfish Gillnet Fishery in Wake of El Nino

The National Marine Fisheries Service announced yesterday the large-mesh drift gillnet fishery for swordfish off the coast of Southern California is now closed through Aug. 31, 2016, due to El Nino conditions.
The closure is designed to protect the endangered populations of loggerhead sea turtles. It remains in place for areas east of 120 degrees W. meridian.
