Family-run Taylor Shellfish Farms of Shelton, Washington, is the largest producer of farmed shellfish in the United States, employing more than 600 employees and working 11,000 acres of tidelands across Washington and British Columbia. In 2015, the concern harvested and sold 50 million oysters, 4 million pounds of Manila clams, 1 million pounds of mussels and 700,000 pounds of geoduck clams.
Over the decades, the Taylor family has come as a matter of birthright to understand the work ethic the business demands. The top three executives at the company — Bill and Paul Taylor and their brother-in-law Jeff Pearson — are part of the family. Bill’s daughter Diani works in public affairs, and Paul’s daughter Brittany manages one of the clam farms and the seed operations. “They all put in plenty of cold nights on the tidelands,” said Bill Dewey, Taylor’s director of public affairs. (Shellfish are mostly harvested at night.)
