Newfoundland's Fisheries Minister Says Quinlans will Rebuild Bay de Verde Plant

With the total loss of the Bay de Verde crab and shrimp plant at the start of Newfoundland's crab season due to a massive fire yesterday, Fisheries Minister Steve Crocker said that he had spoken with company officials who said they want to get the operation back up and running.
The plant, which employed 700 people during the peak season, attracted workers from all over the area and was the anchor employer in that part of the Province.
Newfoundland's Premier Dwight Ball said the fire could have a massive negative impact on the economy of the region, and that the government would try and step in to make whatever transitions are necessary as seamless as possible.
There is some talk of some of the workers getting jobs elsewhere to handle the same raw material.
Bonavista-Burin-Trinity MP Judy Foote issued a statement Monday evening suggesting some help might be on the way for fish plant workers. She spoke with federal Labour Minister Mary Ann Mihychuk, asking her to explore what options might be available to help them..
