Lobster Pot Christmas Tree rises in Plymouth, MA

Plymouth’s Lobster Pot Christmas Tree has risen again.
Built mainly out of lobster traps donated by Plymouth-based lobstermen, this pyramid-shaped structure is further decorated with lobster buoys and other figurative ornaments (they call the big crustacean, Santa ‘Claws’) and encircled with lights.
Plymouth’s isn’t the first of its kind. From Nova Scotia to Cape Cod lobstermen celebrate the season in this unique fashion.
Traditionally, Plymouth’s "tree" is erected on Town Wharf, between Woods Seafood and the harbormaster’s shack, appearing just before Christmas. That’s the time when most, but not all, local lobstermen call it a season and pull their equipment out of the water.
Technically they don’t have to have their equipment out of the water until Feb. 1, but the cold waters and – last year, especially – ice in the harbor, make winter lobstering less profitable.
