ANALYSIS: Scallop Market Sees Imports Surge as New Domestic Season is Underway

With the 2025/2026 Atlantic sea scallop season well underway, market conditions remain unsettled for both domestic and imported product. The previous season was characterized by reduced landings and a notable shortage of larger sea scallops, particularly U/10s, which drove prices to near-record highs. Some price relief has emerged, primarily in the fresh market, as the new season progresses and supply shows modest improvement. However, supply gains remain limited. Current harvest projections...

New Japanese Scallop Processing Plants Start Running One after Another, Aiming at Overseas Markets

Following Japan's release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean, China has banned importing all Japanese seafood products since August 24, 2023. In September 2024, the Chinese and Japanese governments agreed to open negotiations toward lifting the import ban. The two governments negotiated on April 10, 2025, but the Chinese government has kept silent about when to lift the ban.

About 50% of Japan's scallop exports were to China, reaching a record high of 91.1 billion yen in 2022...

OPINION: Seafood Producers Cooperative Responds to WFC Lawsuit Against NOAA On Chinook ESA Listing

On behalf of the nearly 400 members of Seafood Producers Cooperative, who are very dependent on the wild Chinook fishery for a large part of their livelihoods, and as such, are very supportive of conservation efforts regarding Chinook, I would like to respond to the recent news of another attempt by the Wild Fish Conservancy, in their typical fashion of accusations and demands via litigation, to sue the National Marine Fisheries Service for not listing Alaska Wild King Salmon stocks under the Endangered Species Act...

ANALYSIS: Unprecedented Surge in Shrimp Imports Signals Market Imbalance Risk

The US shrimp market remains in flux as April import estimates reveal substantial year-over-year growth, potentially creating inventory imbalances similar to those experienced in 2022. Based on current U.S. Customs data, our April projections indicate imports will reach approximately 162.5 million pounds, representing a remarkable 45.5% increase from the previous year (see table 2). But before diving into any conclusions, let us provide some context...

Russia to Increase Fish Exports to Vietnam

Russia plans to increase its fish exports to Vietnam this year thanks to the ever-growing demand from local processors.

According to German Zverev, President of the All-Russian Association of Fish Producers, Vietnam is actively expanding its processing capacities and becoming a key player in the global market. In 2024, the country almost liquidated its gap with China in terms of fish exports.

At present, Vietnamese processors mainly work with local raw materials, such as pangasius and tilapia, but its taste is inferior to wild fish. Thus, Russia can become an important...
