The Retail Rundown: Seafood Leads Memorial Day Retail Ads; Weather Poses Challenges

Seafood leads retail protein promotions heading into Memorial Day weekend, accounting for 28.7% of total featured protein ad volume. Pork follows at 25.9%, with beef at 21.3% and chicken at 19.3%.

Egg feature volume is virtually absent amid sluggish retail demand. Warmer weather is prompting a shift toward fruit and cereal for breakfast, while elevated, though easing, shelf prices continue to dampen consumer interest, according to Expana.

Within the seafood category, fresh and frozen fillets represent the largest share of advertised items at nearly 28%. Raw shrimp...

New NOAA Research Suggests that Alaskan Salmon Sought Temporary Refuge During Marine Heatwaves

The NOAA Alaska Regional Office recently released new research indicating that Pacific salmon in the Gulf of Alaska used the inshore waters of the Icy Strait as a temporary buffer during marine heatwaves.

Researchers found that salmon likely gravitated towards the Icy Strait’s cold, low salinity waters, seeking refuge during these marine events, which occurred in 2014-2016 and 2019.

According to NOAA, prior studies also found connections between the survival and growth rates of juvenile Pacific salmon to oceanographic conditions and food availability in the marine...

Navigating the Trump Tariff Turbulence: A Comprehensive Timeline

US President Donald Trump and his administration have paused reciprocal tariffs on most countries.

“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown... I am hereby raising the [tariff] charged to China by the [USA] to 125%, effective immediately,” wrote Trump on Truth Social at 1:18 pm ET.

It’s not clear if this 125% is in addition to the 20% imposed on Chinese imports to the US. In early March, Trump noted that he would add another 10% tariff on Chinese goods...

ANALYSIS: Scallop Market Sees Imports Surge as New Domestic Season is Underway

With the 2025/2026 Atlantic sea scallop season well underway, market conditions remain unsettled for both domestic and imported product. The previous season was characterized by reduced landings and a notable shortage of larger sea scallops, particularly U/10s, which drove prices to near-record highs. Some price relief has emerged, primarily in the fresh market, as the new season progresses and supply shows modest improvement. However, supply gains remain limited. Current harvest projections...

91 Gray Whales Reported Dead in Mexican Pacific: Highest Number Since 2020

MEXICO CITY -- The number of gray whales killed in Mexican Pacific waters rose to 91, surpassing the highest record of the "Unusual Mortality Event," reached in 2020, with 88 dead whales.

"This year only 69 births were recorded -- the lowest rate," said Dr. Jorge Urban Ramírez, head of the Marine Mammal Research Program (PRIMMA) of the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS).

"Starting in 2018 we began to see skinnier whales and an increase in mortality throughout their distribution from Alaska to Mexico. After a few years...

Russia May Face a Flounder Shortage This Year

This year, due to a significant reduction in flounder catch and a high share of export products (up to 25%), Russia may be facing a flounder shortage and a coinciding price surge to match.

According to the Fish Union, 2025 flounder catch in the Far East has decreased by 25% year-on-year, though the “high season,” for flounder catch is still underway, falling in the...

Norway Reports One Million Fish Mortalities in Production Areas 9 and 10

Today, the Norwegian government announced that the algal bloom in production areas 9 and 10 has led to approximately one million fish mortalities for several farms in Nordland and Troms. Of these mortalities, 250,000 are smolts.

The highest mortality was reported between May 10-12 in production area 10, particularly in the area around Astafjorden, with four companies being affected to varying degrees. However, fish mortalities decreased throughout the week after the peak mortality period.

This comes after the government announced the harmful algal bloom on May 13...

European Union Imposes Sanctions on Russian Fish Sector for the First Time

The European Union has imposed sanctions on the Russian fish sector as part of its 17th package of sanctions, which was officially approved two days ago. This marks the first time that Russian fish producers and processors have been included in any sanction lists.

The motive for introducing the restrictions, which were imposed on two fishing companies—Norebo Holding, one of Russia’s leading fish producers and processors, and Murman SeaFood—was their unusual trawler movement, which the European regulator considered atypical for fishing activities...
