Maine Eel Producer American Unagi Enters Bankruptcy to Seek Restructuring and Possible Sale 

Maine-based eel producer, American Unagi, filed for Chapter 11 protection in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maine on September 29. 

Sara Rademaker, American Unagi founder and CEO, told RASTech Magazine that the decision was made to “preserve the value of the business while it looks to transition to new ownership.”

Sea Port Products Adds to Recalls Linked to Radioactive Contamination in Indonesian Shrimp 

Sea Port Products Corp., of Kirkland, Washington recalled “very small volumes” to retailers in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Montana, Oregon, Washington State and American Samoa, over Cesium-137 (Cs-137) contamination concerns.  

The recall notice published on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, stated that a limited amount of Sea Port brand bagged Frozen Raw Easy Peel White Shrimp Jumbo size 16/20 count/lb was distributed to small retailers in the aforementioned location.

Salmon Bycatch Reduction Efforts Use AI in Bering Sea Pollock Fishery

Meet YOLOv11, a model used to detect and identify salmon bycatch in the pollock trawl fishery in the Bering Sea. YOLOv11, which stands for You Only Look Once, version 11, was highly accurate and accomplished it more quickly than humans can.

Senators Demand OMB and Commerce Release $246M in NOAA Funding

Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Adam Schiff (D-CA) sent an urgent letter to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Russell Vought and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, demanding that $246 million authorized by Congress for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in FY2025 be released to the agency immediately.

Chilean Salmon Trade Group Works With Authorities to Avert Russia Seafood Export Clash

Consejo del Salmón, a salmon trade association, has begun working with both Chilean and international authorities to resolve export challenges threatening seafood shipments to Russia. The move follows a warning from Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) to Chile's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) last month regarding several regulatory violations.

Aquaculture Stewardship Council Welcomes Atlantic Cod to Sustainability Program

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) announced that it will add Atlantic cod to its program in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Subpesca Sector Report: Chilean Landings Reach Their Highest Level in Five Years

The latest sector report, issued monthly by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), has shown a sustained increase in accumulated landings in Chile, reaching 3,044,774 tons so far. This demonstrates that landings in the country have reached their highest point compared to the last five-year period (2020 to 2024), when they averaged just over 2.7 million tons. EEOC Files Suit Alleging Seafood Wholesaler Discriminated Against Women in Warehouse Hiring

The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed a lawsuit alleging that seafood wholesaler Moon N Sea discriminated against qualified female applicants for warehouse positions based on their sex.

According to the suit, KGI Trading GA, Inc. and its affiliated Moon N Sea operations in three states passed over female candidates for warehouse associate roles, allegedly favoring male applicants.

Japan: August Fishery Products Imports Down 5% to 147,875 MT, the Value Increased 4% to JPY 151.5B

According to trade statistics released by the Ministry of Finance on September 26, preliminary figures for August fishery product imports (including seafood and seafood preparations, fishmeal, and seaweed) showed a 5% year-on-year decrease to 147,875 tons, while the import value increased by 4% to 151.569 billion yen ($1.02 billion).
