Chilean Salmon Companies Help Regions Impacted By Forest Fires 

Chile is currently battling what news reports are calling the country’s “deadliest wildfires on record.” 

As of Monday, Reuters reports that the fires have consumed 667,000 acres of land in south-central Chile. The fires in the BioBío, Ñuble and La Araucanía region have claimed 26 lives so far. 

The Ten Tanker plane, which has a capacity to unload 36,000 liters of water, arrived in Chile yesterday. The National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) confirmed that brigade members from Argentina, Spain and Mexico landed to help fight the forest fires...

Fresh Ideation Food Group Recalls Hundreds of Sandwiches, Snacks Due to Listeria Contamination

Baltimore, Maryland-based Fresh Ideation Food Group has recalled over 400 sandwiches, snacks and other food products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, per a February 3 notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The impacted products were distributed in Connecticut, District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Japan Salmon Imports in 2022: Frozen Sockeye Rose 20%, Frozen Trout from Turkey 5-times

In 2022, Japan's total salmon and trout imports reached 292.4 billion yen in CIF value, up 25% from the previous year. The breakdown was 58 billion yen for fresh fish, an increase of 8%, and 217.4 billion yen ($1.64 billion) for frozen fish, an increase of 30%. And 17 billion yen ($128.81 million) for salted, smoked, and prepared products increased by 31%. Delight Foods Recalls Ineligible Catfish Product

The Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced last week that 2,961 pounds of frozen catfish products imported from India are being recalled. India is ineligible to export Siluriformes (catfish) products into the U.S. 

Delight Foods, with distribution facilities in Jersey City, NJ and San Jose, CA, are recalling the product, described as “908 gram (2 lb.) plastic packages containing ‘Seafood delight FRESH FROZEN CATFISH STEAK IF’ frozen fish.” Joseph Parayil, a spokesperson for the company, said only 50 cartons were sent out.

Gulf of Maine Lobster Fishery No Longer Pursuing MSC Recertification

Last week the Maine Certified Sustainable Lobster Association (MCSLA) formally withdrew the fishery from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) program. The news was confirmed by the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), Defenders of Wildlife, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Japan: 2022 Frozen Scallop Exports Record 111,392 MT, JPY 81.1 Billion, Up by 17% and 51%

According to trade statistics released by the Ministry of Finance on January 27, exports of frozen scallops (shell-on and shell-off combined) in 2022 reached 111,392 tons, an increase of 17% from the previous year.
