Greenpeace Reaction to Bering Sea Canyon Decision Shows Utter Contempt for Council Process

One of the key foundations of global seafood sustainability is managing fisheries and habitat impacts using the best available science.
The genius of the US fishery management system is that first, it is open to all stakeholders, transparent, and democratic. In other words, the N. Pacific Council and NOAA both have processes in place to take in comments from all parties, and respond to those comments. The council then holds open committee and council votes, where members publicly explain their positions and reasoning.
This is a far more open governance process than most NGOs have for fisheries issues.
But secondly, the councils are bound by US law to follow the best scientific advice.
When Greenpeace mounted a campaign to protect Bering Sea Corals in the Pribilof and Zhemchug Canyons, they first praised the council process.....
