GSSI Sustainability Benchmarking Tool to Debut at Conxemar in October

Following a pilot test run by eight seafood certfication schemes including such diverse operations as the MSC, VietGAP, and ASMI, the Global Seafood Sustainability Initiative (GSSI) announced that the full benchmarking tool would be unveiled in Vigo, Spain at the Conxemar trade show and conference October 8, 2015.
The completion of the GSSI benchmark is a key milestone towards normalizing seafood sustainability certifications. Like the previously adopted Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) which resulted in inter-operability among the world's food safety certifications, the GSSI will result in a common benchmark that gives credibility to various third party and government certification schemes.
One of the key features of GSSI, which is consistent with the FAO's vision of responsible seafood, is the ability of governments to have individual fisheries within their country that are well managed meet the certification standards.
Bill DiMento, Vice President of Quality Assurance, Sustainability, and Government Affairs, High Liner Foods said “The pilot was GSSI's moment of truth as it had to pressure test the GSSI Global Benchmark Tool against its open stakeholder developed procedures and criteria."
