Marine Stewardship Council Issues Statement on Chain of Custody System in Response to our Article

MSC Americas has sent a statement in response to our article on the proposed mandatory MOTS online transaction reporting system. Their full statement is below.
In response to the August 18 article titled, “Is the MSC Making a Global Power Grab to Protect Monopoly with New Chain of Custody Program,” the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) would like to clarify a few aspects of the MSC Online Transaction Solution (MOTS) that is currently under development and open for consultation.
As demand for sustainable seafood grows, the evolution of the MSC’s traceability standard and associated tools and procedures is critical to keep pace with industry best practice. MOTS was developed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of existing traceability audits by automatically verifying transactions of MSC certified seafood as it flows through the global supply chain. The application cross checks volumes of MSC certified seafood purchased and sold at each link of the supply chain. The tool aims to improve chain of custody integrity, reduce possible product substitution or mislabeling, and streamline chain of custody audits....
