Texas Gulf Shrimp Industry Confronting Multiple Challenges

Two weeks after the annual blessing of the Brownsville-Port Isabel shrimp fleet, the industry is facing stiff headwinds as it enters the marketplace this season.
Imports, which had been at a low ebb in recent years largely due to a fatal disease among foreign, pond-raised shrimp, have rebounded now that the foreign growers have gotten a handle on the situation.
Gulf shrimp prices, which were at record highs when imports were low, have plummeted. Plus, this season’s shrimp harvest is expected to be poor, in part due to heavy spring rains that washed young shrimp out to sea too ...
