Record Week for Bristol Bay Sockeye

It’s been a record-breaking week for the Bristol Bay sockeye return and the fishermen who are catching it. Daily landings broke records for this time in history every day for the past five days, bringing in a cumulative catch as of late Wednesday, July 15, of 27.15 million sockeye salmon.
Escapement has exceeded pre-season goals in the Naknek, Egegik, Wood, and Nushagak river systems as of yesterday and will likely over the weekend for the Ugashik and Igushik rivers. The Kvichak escapement was downgraded several weeks ago from 7.69 million fish to 2.35 million, and has exceeded that by more than double, to 4.87 million reds.
