Putin Signs Law to Ban Drift-net Fishing in Russia's EEZ

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law legislation banning
drift-net fishing in Russia's exclusive economic zones starting January, 2016.
The move comes as a major blow to Japanese fishermen who have long been fishing for salmon and trout in Russian EEZ waters under bilateral arrangements.
The legislation, prepared by Senator Valentina Matviyenko, a Putin ally, and other influential lawmakers with the aim of conserving natural resources, was approved by both houses of the Russian parliament last month.
Matviyenko, chair of the Russian Federation Council, denied that the bill targets Japan, adding that the two countries' fisheries cooperation pact will be not abolished...
