The all-party shrimp committee was in Ottawa Tuesday to deliver a report to federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea which provincial politicians say presents overwhelming evidence that the “last in, first out” policy must end.
The report looks at the economic impact of disproportionately cutting inshore shrimp quotas while protecting the larger offshore harvesters, and concludes that the current federal policy is the worst possible option.
With declining stocks, cuts in recent years have decimated the inshore harvesters, but the federal government says that because they were granted quotas more recently, they must bear the brunt of the cuts...
