Canadian Gov't will Support Extension of Oil Drilling Moratorium on Georges Bank

Nova Scotia and the Canadian Maritimes got a piece of good news today, says Denny Morrow, head of a coalition opposed to oil drilling on Georges Bank, and also head of the Nova Scoatia Fish Processors Association. Since the 1990 there has been a prohibition on oil exploration and drilling on both the Canadian and US side of Georges Bank, the richest fishing ground in the Western Atlantic. The US extended the moratorium, but the despite provincial pleas from Nova Scotia, the Harper government declined to do so.
However, in the Federal budget document released this week, it was announced that the federal government would join Nova Scotia in legislating an extension of the moratorium.
Denny Morrow, speaking for a coalition of fishermen, seafood processors and exporters, environmental groups and aboriginal communities with fishing rights on Georges Bank, says the announcement in Minister Joe Oliver’s budget that the federal government will join with the Nova Scotia government to legislate an extension to the Georges Bank moratorium adds to a recent spate of good news for the province’s fishing and seafood industry.
