N.S. Lobster Buyers Worry About Transfer of Green Crab Parasites to Lobster in Crates

SYDNEY, A parasite found in green crab is causing some concern among Nova Scotia lobster buyers after research showed the parasite can be transferred to live lobsters caught in traps using green crab as bait.
A green crab bait fishery has been under consideration for several years around Cape Breton, but no licences have been issued.
Researchers published a study last week showing the parasite Profilicollis botulus, normally found only in green crabs, was found in significant numbers of lobsters caught with green crab bait.
Anecdotal evidence suggests the parasite causes lobsters to die earlier while being held in a live pound.
