Assoc. of Seafood Producers Not Pleased With Newfoundland's Decision to Pull Out of CETA Talks

Newfoundland’s Association of Seafood Producers (ASP) is concerned with the provincial government’s decision to pull out of further free trade talks generally, but specifically over the move to cease further discussions about the Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) deal with Europe. This week Newfoundland’s leadership elected to pull out of the trade talks in dispute around terms of a $400 million cost-shared federal fund that is part of the CETA deal. “As we said in December, we’ve been fighting EU tariffs for years now, and we should not put their removal in peril. Jeopardizing CETA – or freer trade generally - is not a solution,” said ASP’s Executive Director Derek Butler.

A developing snow crab fishery in Norway stirred up a lot of buzz at the annual crab and shellfish conference held in Trondheim last week. According to the Norwegian Export Council production out of the new snow crab fishery was up substantially to 8.8 million pounds in 2014.

In other news the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organization has corrected a few inaccuracies in a paper published in Science about China’s aquaculture industry. According to IFFO, important facts were ignored regarding the current use of by-products, the levels of fishmeal used in aquaculture compared with land animal production and the overall net fish production versus the use of fishmeal.

Meanwhile, in today’s Editor’s View column, John Sackton asks if the commercial fishing sector is about to be sacrificed in favor of the recreational industry in Washington due to a loss of leadership.

Finally, Felipe Sandoval, the president of major Chilean salmon trade association SalmonChile , said the merger between Marine Harvest Chile and AquaChile should help the companies operate much more efficiently. "[Marine Harvest and AquaChile] may be better coordinated to have more presence and more concessions within each of the districts. From the health point of view there is a gain for them," he said.
