Chile cuts 2015 hake quota with biomass down over 6% in a year

Chilean fishery officials have cut next year's hake quota by 1,000 tons to 18,000 tons on a recommendation by Oceana.

Subpesca announced the cut after an acoustics survey by the Fisheries Development Institute found the hake fishery's biomass had fallen over 6 percent in the past year.

The Chilean hake fishery has also been racked by years of declining catches linked to an excessive take of juveniles. Between 2001 an 2013 catches declined 70 percent. By 2012 90 percent of the catch was comprised of juvenile fish...
