South Africa slashes West Coast rock lobster quota in effort to rebuild stock but poaching continues

The fisheries department has slashed this season's rock lobster catch limit by just under 17 percent in a bid to help the heavily-overfished stocks to recover.
Based on advice from scientists who have assessed the stocks of West Coast rock lobster, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries spokesman Lionel Adendorf said yesterday the move was an attempt to increase the number of larger male rock lobster.
Estimates are that between 500 and 800 tons of rock lobster are poached every year.
