Bluefin tuna bite off Gloucester MA called best in ten years

“It’s been quite a few years since we’ve seen a run like this, probably nine or 10 years,” said Patrick Mead, owner of Compass, off Commercial Street.
Mead estimated he is processing 15 to 20 giant bluefin tunas a day, ranging in size from 200 pounds to 600 pounds. Most, he said, have fallen in the 300- to 500-pound range.
“We’re selling a lot domestically because the Japanese market has weakened a bit because the yen is down against the dollar,” Mead said.
The market has been fluid, especially as more and more tuna have been landed. Fishermen said they’ve been getting between $8 and $20 per pound, depending on the quality of the fish...
