Prevalence of low growth, diseased shrimp hampering sales in China

Total shrimp value in China has been hit hard in a number of areas due to disease, and because of local processing plants reducing their purchases.
Industry contacts say there are four reasons for the lower values. First, with most producers cleaning up their ponds at present, the sizes are highly variable.
Second, the market has been flooded with supplies of small and sick shrimp. At the recent GAA meeting in Vietnam, there were widespread reports of a microsporidian fungal infection that limits shrimp growth being present in Guangdong and Guangxi.
