Today's Main Story: West Coast Dungeness Crabbers Set Gear on $2.75 Price as New Storms Move In
SeafoodNews' Susan Chambers writes that Dungeness crabbers took advantage of a weather window Monday and set gear while another storm lurks off the West Coast. Fishermen said Newport crabbers settled with processors for $2.75 a pound + a quarter below last year's formal negotiated opening price of $3 per pound. Oregon state-supervised price talks failed in early January this year, unlike years past. Many in the industry were concerned about the quality of crab coming from areas that, as of Jan. 15, were not up to the usual standards of 25 percent or 23 percent meat recovery.
