Bankruptcy Closes Homer’s Auction Block, City Objects to Pending Sale

One of the two major commercial fish processing plants in Homer, AK closed permanently last month and now a pending sale to Southwind Seafoods is in jeopardy as the City of Homer files an objection to the sale.
One of the reasons for the bankruptcy filing by The Auction Block last September was alleged unfair treatment by the city regarding fees for using the city crane and ice facilities. In a complaint filed with the Federal Maritime Commission in 2012, the Auction Block accused the city of discriminatory practices in lease fees to a long-standing processing facility that competes with the Auction Block for fish deliveries during the season.
That complaint was dismissed by the FMC in 2013 under jurisdictional considerations.
