EU Importers Already Shifting Away from Indian Shrimp Prior to EU Inspection Visit

Indian Seafood Exporters are concerned that the upcoming visit by an EU inspection team might lead to a ban on Indian Seafood Exports to the EU.
In 2016, the EU increased the frequency of inspections from 10% to 50% of shrimp shipments from India.
A review of EU rejections shows that between January of 2016 and November of 2017, a total of 22 cross border shipments were rejected. Of these 15 were due to Nitrofurans, and 2 were for Chloramphenicol.
The others were for poor temperature control, and salmonella, which the EU deems ‘not serious’.
The pace of rejections for nitrofurans has worsened in 2017. In 2016 there were 3 rejections, while in 2017 there were 12, the latest being 2 rejections in September of 2017.
The British Frozen Food Federation said in a letter to the Commerce and Industry Minister in August that indications they were receiving from the commission is that the steps taken so far were not enough.
