Marine Harvest to Halt Use of Copper Treated Salmon Net Pens in BC

Marine Harvest Canada (MHC) purchased five boats that the company will modify to use Remote Operated Net Cleaners (RONCs) as part of its move away from copper-treated nets at its salmon farming sites in British Columbia.
Since November, MHC has spent over $2 million to purchase 12 RONCs. The technology uses high-pressure water and scrubbing discs to safely remove organics that naturally grow on net pens that contain farm-raised salmon.
The RONCs are housed on a support vessel which moors alongside salmon farm cages to pressure wash nets without having to disturb any fish or infrastructure.
