First MSC Certification of Newfoundland Cod Stock Comes after Six Years of Effort

The Newfoundland 3PS cod stock has been certified as meeting the MSC criteria for a sustainable fishery.  
 
It is the first Atlantic Cod fishery to be certified in Canada, and represents a step forward from the world's most well known fisheries disaster: the collapse of Newfoundland Northern Cod.
 
The MSC says "This milestone certification marks a new page in the history of Atlantic cod in Canada. It signals to the world that collaborative efforts from fisheries, industry, government and NGOs have the power to improve the health of fish stocks while sustaining hope for the communities that rely on fishing for their livelihoods."
 
The Clients for the certification were Icewater Fisheries and Ocean Choice International, which are the two primary cod processors in Newfoundland.  Their certificate sharing letter says that all harvesters are covered by the MSC certificate so long as they deliver to chain of custody clients.  New Clients will be added to the certificate based on equitable sharing of costs. 
 
These two companies also have the largest quota shares for Northern Cod, once that fishery has rebuilt to harvetable status....
