NOAA: Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone Below Average in 2022
NOAA announced that scientists found that this year’s Gulf of Mexico “dead zone” is roughly 3,275 square miles, which means over 2 million acres of habitat potentially unavailable to fish and bottom species.
The latest dead zone is below the five-year average dead zone size of 4280 miles, over two times larger than management targets, per NOAA. The average target size is 1900 square miles or less by 2035.
