Gulf Fishing Communities Impacted by Spillway Opening Receive $88 Million in Disaster Relief
Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced the allocation of $88 million in fishery disaster funding to Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi due to the impacts of the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway in 2019.
The freshwater flooding wreaked havoc on fisheries throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Last month, the Spillway was opened for the third straight year, a historic mark.
