Third Period on Copper River Opens Long-Closed Chinook Areas
The third period of fishing on the Copper River opened yesterday and included areas that have been closed to Chinook fishing for many years, perhaps decades. These areas are inside the barrier sandbars that extend seaward and north-south along the coast from the mouth of the Copper River. They have been closed for perhaps a generation of fishermen, to protect chinook salmon that 'hole up' in the deeper areas behind the bars before entering the river to spawn.
