Today's Main Story: DFO Reverses Surf Clam Award After Refusing to Re-open Flawed Process in Victory for Clearwater
Today's lead item is a report from Seafood News publisher John Sackton on how the Canadian Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans has withdrawn an allocation of 25% of the arctic surf clam quota from the small New Brunswick First Nation that won the award. They have also pledged to work with existing sole license holder, Clearwater Seafoods, to ensure that the unallocated quota can be used to support income and livelihoods of plant and vessel workers this year. In other news, the price of large Dungeness crab increased twice within one day and reached as high as 110 yuan/jin (1 jin=0.5 kg; $31.92/kg USD) in both Beijing and Guangzhou. The price increase has lasted more than one month, and they have risen to such a high level that one importer said jokingly that Dungeness crab are even more expensive than Boston lobsters.
